Fallen Prestige and the Return of the Suppressed

- Seung-hyeon Lee’s “crypto-MUSEUM"

The dictionary defines museum as an institution in the service of society and its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment for the purposes of education, study and enjoyment. Looking at this definition, we presume that all objects conserved and exhibited in museums are some objects of artistic, cultural, historical, or scientific importance. If we look at Seung-hyeon Lee’s “crypto-MUSEUM” (Gallery Zandari, 7.22~8.29, 2010), the artist seems like he is trying to erase the meaning of museum or use the influence museums have.

All the works in “crypto-MUSEUM” started from a single dot in which lines and figures expanded from. The elegant lines drawn with vermilion ink or black ink generate monstrous creatures. But they are, actually, well-known classic works of distinguished artists. Vermeer’s ‘Girl With A Pearl Earring’ and Picasso’s ‘Guernica’ have turned into strange creatures with all the virus-like lines and figures that seem to be endlessly proliferating. As a result, the image of original classic works still exist and at the same time stops existing. These creatures which now have this disguised ‘prestige’ or ‘influence’ of the classics and are placed in Lee’s sacred, ‘crypto-MUSEUM’.

Lee’s works looks like his own ritual of bringing back the masters who were suppressed or banished from the society during the reign of modernism. He is saying that these masters still deserve the respect, and prestige or maybe he is admitting that the influence or prestige of the classics and museums is no longer there by showing the virus-infected image of the classics.

Whatever his intentions, Lee’s works in “crpyto-MUSEUM” indeed shows that some foreign creatures have taken over our sacred space, disguised in all the prestige of the classics.
