이승현 작가 소개

이승현(1974~)은 이미지가 생성되는 과정, 그 찰나의 순간에 발생하는 긴장과 충돌을 탐구하는 작가다. 그는 자신의 작업을 "그림이 작가를 통해 스스로 생장한다"는 관점에서 출발시키지만 여기서 작가는 단순한 통로(매개자)에 머물지 않는다. 그는 언어화되기 직전의 날것 그대로의 감각들이 캔버스라는 물리적 질서 속으로 진입하려 할 때 그 경계에서 발생하는 마찰과 파열음을 기록하는 적극적인 수행자다.

이승현의 드로잉에서 보이는 섬세한 선들은 단순히 증식하거나 흐르는 것이 아니라, 화면의 물성에 끊임없이 저항하며 나아가는 궤적이다. 작가는 비정형의 형상이 출현하기를 막연히 기다리는 대신 직관의 날을 세워 그 형상이 언어의 감옥에 갇히지 않도록 교란하고 해체한다. 이 과정에서 선들은 호흡하듯 리듬을 만들지만 그 이면에는 규정되기를 거부하는 치열한 ‘길항(Antagonism)’이 숨쉬고 있다.

그의 작업은 이미지와 대상 사이의 미세한 틈을 비집고 들어가 그 간극을 확장하는 시도다. 이는 "이미지란 무엇인가"라는 존재론적 질문을 던지는 것이며 의미가 아닌 흐름을, 형상이 아닌 생성의 에너지를 선택하는 투쟁이다.

서울과학기술대학교 조형예술학과 및 동 대학원을 졸업한 이승현은 2004년부터 현재까지 10회의 개인전과 다수의 기획전을 통해 독자적인 조형 언어를 구축해왔다. 제30회 중앙미술대전 선정작가, 제8회 송은미술대상전 우수상 수상 등을 통해 그 작품성을 인정받았으며, 국립현대미술관 미술은행 등 주요 기관에 작품이 소장되어 있다.

 [Artist Statement] Lee Seunghyun

Lee Seunghyun (b. 1974) investigates the tension and collision that spark in the fleeting moment of image generation. While his practice originates from the perspective that "drawings grow autonomously through the artist," Lee refuses to remain a mere conduit or passive mediator. Instead, he operates as an active agent who records the friction and rupture occurring at the boundary where raw, pre-linguistic sensations attempt to breach the physical order of the canvas.

The delicate lines in Lee’s drawings are not merely proliferating or flowing; they are trajectories that advance by constantly resisting the materiality of the surface. Rather than idly waiting for amorphous forms to emerge, the artist sharpens the edge of his intuition to disrupt and deconstruct these forms before they are captured by the prison of language. In this process, while the lines create a rhythmic, breathing structure, a fierce antagonism—a refusal to be defined—pulsates beneath the surface.

His work is an attempt to pry open and expand the subtle gaps between the image and the object. It poses an ontological question: "What is an image?" It is a struggle that chooses flow over meaning, and the energy of becoming over static form.

Lee graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Seoul National University of Science and Technology, where he also received his MFA. Since 2004, he has held 10 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions, establishing a distinctive visual language. His artistic merit has been recognized through his selection as the Artist of the Year at the 30th JoongAng Fine Arts Prize and winning the Excellence Award at the 8th Songeun Art Award. His works are included in major collections, including the Art Bank of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea.
