작업 노트
나의 드로잉은 결과에 대한 예측 없이 시작된다. 흰 화면 위에 첫 선을 긋는 행위는 무언가를 재현하려는 의지가 아니라 새로운 생성이 시작되는 기점이다.
작업 초기, 나는 의식과 무의식의 경계에서 꿈틀거리는 기이한 형상들을 소환하는 주술사에 가까웠다. 벽 깊숙이 숨어 있던 미지의 생명체들을 발견하여 전시장을 그들을 위한 동물원으로 탈바꿈시켰고 그들의 무작위적인 증식을 조력했다. 당시의 작업은 내면의 에너지를 양분 삼아 기생하던 존재들을 세상 밖으로 배양해 내는 미확인 생명체의 출현 과정과도 같았다. 형상이 형상을 부르고 선이 다음 선의 원인이 되는 자기조직화의 흐름 속에서 나는 생명체의 본능적인 몸부림을 목격할 수 있었다.
작업이 거듭될수록 나의 시선은 생명체 자체에서 그들이 서식하는 배양지로 확장되었다. 우리를 둘러싼 견고하고 기계적인 질서들—바둑의 기보, 고전 명화의 조형 체계, 표준화된 화면 조정 패턴 등—이 나의 새로운 숙주가 되었다. 나는 이 획일화된 시스템 내부에 ‘마스터피스 바이러스’를 투입하거나 바둑의 행마를 변이시키는 방식으로 시스템에 개입한다. 정해진 틀 속에서 자율성을 지닌 존재가 우연과 필연을 거치며 성장하는 모습은 규격화된 사회 속에서 일탈과 안식처를 꿈꾸는 우리의 삶과 닮아 있다.
최근 나의 관심은 인식의 프레임 사이, 즉 의미가 생성되기 전의 ‘무명의 순간’에 머물러 있다. 시각 정보가 의식 속에서 특정 의미로 고착되기 전의 날것 그대로의 움직임에 주목한다. 이는 이미지가 관념으로 굳어져 인지되기 전의 유동적인 생성 과정을 추적하는 일이다. 나는 완결된 형태보다는 감각의 흐름을 따라 피어나는 세계의 이면과 새로운 인식의 가능성을 그려내고자 한다.
나는 손의 이동을 따라 시공간을 자유롭게 유영하듯 드로잉을 이어간다. 그 여정에는 언제나 또 다른 증식을 준비하는 가변적 생장점들이 동행한다. 나는 내 안에 잠복해 있던 생명 에너지가 성장하는 과정을 지켜보는 관찰자이자 그들이 세상에 나오도록 돕는 매개자다. 나는 이 비결정적인 흐름을 추적하며 보이지 않는 틀 속에서 매 순간 꿈틀거리는 날것의 감각을 기록해 나간다.
Artist statement
My drawings begin without any prediction of the outcome. The act of drawing the first line on a blank surface is not an intention to represent something, but rather the starting point from which a new genesis emerges.
In the early stages of my work, I was akin to a shaman summoning bizarre forms that wriggled on the threshold between consciousness and the unconscious. I discovered unknown creatures hidden deep within the walls, transforming the exhibition space into a "zoo" for them and facilitating their random proliferation. At that time, my work was a process of manifesting unidentified life forms that had existed parasitically, nourished by my inner energy. Within this self-organizing flow—where form summons form and one line begets the next—I witnessed the primal, instinctive struggles of living organisms.
As my work progressed, my focus expanded from the life forms themselves to the "culture media" they inhabit. The rigid, mechanical orders that surround us—such as the notations of Baduk (Go), the formal systems of classical masterpieces, and standardized color bars—became my new hosts. I attempt to intervene in these systems by injecting a "Masterpiece Virus" or mutating the tactical moves of Baduk. The sight of an autonomous entity growing through chance and necessity within a fixed framework mirrors our own lives, as we dream of deviation and sanctuary within a standardized society.
Recently, my interest has been anchored in the "anonymous moments" between the frames of perception—the space where meaning has yet to be generated. I focus on the raw movement of visual information before it is crystallized into a specific meaning within our consciousness. This involves tracing the fluid process of generation before an image solidifies into a concept. Rather than seeking completed forms, I strive to depict the hidden side of the world and the possibilities of new perception that bloom along the flow of sensation.
I continue my drawings as if freely drifting through a different dimension of time and space, guided by the movement of my hand. This journey is always accompanied by variable "meristems" (growing points) preparing for further proliferation. I am both an observer watching the growth of life energies latent within me and a mediator facilitating their emergence into the world. By tracing this indeterminate flow, I record the raw, wriggling sensations that persist within invisible frameworks at every moment.
이승현 (b. 1974)
이승현은 "그림은 작가를 통해 스스로 생장한다"는 유기적 관점에서 이미지가 생성되는 과정 자체를 탐구한다.
서울과학기술대학교 조형예술학과 및 동 대학원을 졸업했다. 2004년부터 현재까지 10회의 개인전을 가졌으며 다수의 기획 단체전에 참여했다.
제8회 송은미술대상전 우수상(2008), 제30회 중앙미술대전 선정작가(2008), 퍼블릭x퍼블릭 우수상(2017) 등을 수상하였다.
서울시립미술관 난지창작스튜디오, 국립현대미술관 고양레지던시, 인천아트플랫폼 등 주요 레지던시 프로그램에 참여했으며 현재 서울을 기반으로 드로잉의 확장을 탐구하는 작업을 지속하고 있다.
Lee Seung-hyun (b. 1974)
Lee Seung-hyun explores the process of image generation through an organic lens, positing that "the painting grows itself through the artist.". He earned his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the Department of Fine Arts at Seoul National University of Science and Technology. Since 2004, Lee has held 10 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous prestigious group shows.
His excellence has been recognized through several awards, including the Excellence Prize at the 8th Songeun Art Award (2008), being named a Selected Artist at the 30th JoongAng Fine Arts Prize (2008), and receiving the Excellence Prize at PublicxPublic (2017). Lee has participated in major residency programs, such as the Nanji Residency (Seoul Museum of Art), Goyang Residency (National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea), and Incheon Art Platform. He is currently based in Seoul, continuing his profound investigation into the expansion of drawing.
