아티스트 스테이트먼트

나의 작업은 "우리의 선택과 의지는 얼마나 자유로운가?"라는 인간의 주체성에 대한 근본적인 질문에서 출발한다. 나는 의식과 무의식이 교차하는 경계에서 숨어 살아온 ‘미확인 생명체(미지의 생명)’를 불러낸다. 이들은 완성된 형태를 계획하는 스케치 없이 생물학적 세포가 우연히 발생하고 증식하며 성장하는 과정을 닮은 자율적이고 무의식적인 선의 흐름을 통해 태어난다.

 

나에게 선을 긋는 행위는 신체적 기록이다. 그것은 화면과 세계 사이에서 매개하는 '살아있는 신체'의 요동치는 흐름이자 호흡의 궤적이다. 선은 화면을 스치고 침투하며 반응하고 스스로 증식하는 원인과 결과의 순환을 만들어내며 형상이 자율성을 가지고 생장하게 한다. 이 과정은 견고한 기계적인 사회 질서에 저항하며 변이와 일탈을 통해 안식처를 꿈꾸는 몸부림의 은유이기도 하다.

 

최근 나의 탐구는 인간 인식의 메커니즘으로 확장되었다. 이미지가 포착되는 찰나의 순간을 추적하는 작업을 통해 현실을 인식하는 의식 그 자체를 진단한다. 나는 단순한 창조자를 넘어 질서와 무질서 사이의 긴장을 조율하며 형상이 숨을 쉬고 출현하는 순간을 기다리는 매개자이자 주술사 그리고 관찰자로서 임한다.

 

Artist Statement

My practice begins with a fundamental inquiry into human agency: "How free are our choices and will?". I summon "crypto-organisms"—unidentified forms of life that have long resided in the hidden threshold where consciousness and the subconscious intersect. These entities are born through a flow of autonomous and subconscious lines, mimicking the organic process of biological cells that emerge, proliferate, and grow by chance, without a predetermined sketch or drawing.

 

For me, the act of drawing is a somatic record—a fluctuating rhythm of the "living body" that mediates between the canvas and the world. The lines slide across, penetrate, and react to the surface, creating a recursive cycle of cause and effect that allows the forms to grow with their own autonomy. This process serves as a metaphor for a struggle—a movement of mutation and deviation that dreams of sanctuary while resisting the rigid, mechanical orders of society.

 

Recently, my investigation has expanded into the mechanics of human perception. By tracing the fleeting moments when an image is captured, I diagnose the very consciousness that perceives reality. Transcending the role of a mere creator, I stand as a mediator, a sorcerer, and an observer who coordinates the tension between order and chaos, waiting for the precise moment when a form truly begins to breathe.

이승현 (b. 1974)

이승현은 "그림은 작가를 통해 스스로 생장한다"는 유기적 관점에서 이미지가 생성되는 과정 자체를 탐구한다.

서울과학기술대학교 조형예술학과 및 동 대학원을 졸업했다. 2004년부터 현재까지 10회의 개인전을 가졌으며 다수의 기획 단체전에 참여했다.

제8회 송은미술대상전 우수상(2008), 제30회 중앙미술대전 선정작가(2008), 퍼블릭x퍼블릭 우수상(2017) 등을 수상하며 작업의 우수성을 인정받았다.

서울시립미술관 난지창작스튜디오, 국립현대미술관 고양레지던시, 인천아트플랫폼 등 주요 레지던시 프로그램에 참여했으며, 현재 서울을 기반으로 드로잉의 확장을 탐구하는 작업을 지속하고 있다.

 

Lee Seung-hyun (b. 1974)

Lee Seung-hyun explores the process of image generation through an organic lens, positing that "the painting grows itself through the artist.". He earned his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the Department of Fine Arts at Seoul National University of Science and Technology. Since 2004, Lee has held 10 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous prestigious group shows.

His excellence has been recognized through several awards, including the Excellence Prize at the 8th Songeun Art Award (2008), being named a Selected Artist at the 30th JoongAng Fine Arts Prize (2008), and receiving the Excellence Prize at PublicxPublic (2017). Lee has participated in major residency programs, such as the Nanji Residency (Seoul Museum of Art), Goyang Residency (National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea), and Incheon Art Platform. He is currently based in Seoul, continuing his profound investigation into the expansion of drawing.
