이승현

이승현(1974년생)은 이미지가 생성되고 인식되는 과정 자체를 탐구하는 작가다. 특정 대상을 재현하거나 이미 규정된 형상을 그리기보다 이미지가 아직 명확한 형태와 의미를 갖기 이전의 순간에 주목하며 드로잉과 회화를 통해 이미지의 생성 과정을 탐색해 왔다.

그의 작업은 가느다란 선을 반복하고 중첩하며 형상을 만들어가는 과정에서 출발한다. 선들은 서로 연결되고 증식하면서 비정형의 형상을 이루지만 작가는 그 정체를 처음부터 규정하지 않는다. 그리는 과정에서 우연히 발생하는 형상과 관계를 관찰하고 받아들이면서 그의 작업 태도는 이미지를 ‘만드는 것’에서 이미지가 ‘나타나는 과정을 발견하는 것’으로 변화해 왔다. 그림은 더 이상 작가가 일방적으로 완성하는 대상이 아니라 작가를 매개로 스스로 생장하는 과정이 된다.

이러한 작업 방식은 특정 순간에 포착된 감각과 기억을 다루는 최근의 작업으로 확장된다. 작가는 기억 속에 정지된 장면을 재현하기보다 그 너머에서 끊임없이 움직이는 시간과 지각을 따라가며 대상의 표면과 내부에서 발생하는 이미지의 흔적을 탐색한다. 선은 대상을 묘사하는 수단을 넘어 새로운 관계와 형상을 생성하는 능동적인 요소가 된다.

그 결과 그의 화면은 완성된 형상을 제시하기보다 끊임없이 생성되는 상태에 머문다. 기억과 지각, 존재와 부재, 이미지와 대상 사이의 경계에서 선과 형상은 계속해서 변화하고 관계를 맺는다. 이승현의 작업은 이러한 생성의 과정을 통해 이미지란 무엇이며, 우리가 어떤 순간에 하나의 형상을 이미지로 인식하게 되는지를 질문한다.

Lee Seung-hyun

Lee Seung-hyun (b. 1974) is an artist who explores the processes through which images are created and perceived. Rather than representing specific objects or predetermined forms, he focuses on the moment before an image acquires a distinct form and meaning, exploring the emergence of images through drawing and painting.

His work begins with the repetition and accumulation of fine lines. As the lines connect and proliferate to form amorphous shapes, the artist does not define their identity from the outset. By observing and accepting the forms and relationships that emerge unexpectedly in the drawing process, his artistic approach has gradually shifted from “making an image” to “discovering the process through which an image emerges.” The artwork is no longer an object unilaterally completed by the artist, but a process that grows through the artist as its mediator.

This approach has expanded into his recent work, which engages with sensations and memories captured at particular moments. Rather than reconstructing a scene fixed in memory, he follows the constantly shifting flow of time and perception beyond it, tracing the emergence of images at the surface and within the object. The line transcends its role as a means of depiction and becomes an active element that generates new forms and relationships.

As a result, his canvases remain in a state of becoming rather than presenting completed forms. At the boundaries between memory and perception, presence and absence, and image and object, lines and forms continually transform and enter into new relationships. Through this process of becoming, Lee Seung-hyun asks what an image is and at what moment we come to recognize a form as an image.
