교신 Transmissions

이승현 작가는 김기대 작가와 물리적 만남 없이, 파주와 제주라는 서로 다른 공간에 머물며 SNS를 통해 시각적·청각적 신호를 주고받으며 한 달간의 드로잉 기록을 진행했다. 이승현 작가는 마치 서로 다른 차원 혹은 미지의 생명체와 교신하듯, 얼굴도 목소리도 알지 못한 채 신호를 주고받으며 작업을 지속했다. 이 과정에서 언어의 한계와 감각의 변형, 난독의 메커니즘을 바탕으로 완전한 소통이 불가능한 상황에서 발생하는 이미지와 의미의 변화를 탐구한다.

파주와 제주의 물리적 거리 속에서 한 달간 SNS 신호를 주고받으며 기록된 수행적 드로잉이다. 소통의 불가능성에서 파생된 이미지와 의미의 변화를 탐구하며 작가의 작업 세계가 타자와의 관계성으로 확장된 작업이다.

교신(交信)

파주와 제주. 서로 다른 시공간에 머무는 작가 김기대와 나는 단 한 번의 만남도 없이 SNS라는 낯선 통로로 신호를 주고받았다. 미지의 생명체와 교신하듯 오간 한 달간의 안부는 작업의 소중한 단초가 되었다.

이 실험의 중심에는 ‘언어의 한계’와 ‘난독(dyslexia)’이라는 감각의 변형이 자리한다. 상대의 얼굴이나 목소리조차 모르는 상태에서 나는 완전한 이해보다 오히려 오해와 어긋남이 만들어낼 불완전한 가능성에 주목했다. 가벼운 안부 인사부터 서로의 관심사와 작업의 근황까지 주고 받은 텍스트와 이미지는 드로잉의 재료가 되었다.

이 기록은 소통의 완결성을 추구하는 환상에서 벗어나 불확실한 변형과 생성의 과정을 보여주는 드로잉이다. 우리가 주고 받은 신호들은 언어로 다 담을 수 없는 감각과 오해 그리고 상상력의 흔적이다. 이 드로잉들이 또 다른 차원의 문이 되어 관객의 의식 속에 낯선 파문이 일기를 기대한다.

Paju and Jeju. Artist Kim Ki-dae and I, residing in different spatiotemporal planes, exchanged signals through the unfamiliar passage of SNS without a single meeting. Like communicating with an unknown life form, our month-long exchange of greetings became the precious catalyst for this work.

At the center of this experiment lie 'the limitations of language,' 'sensory transformation,' and the phenomenon of 'dyslexia'. Knowing neither our faces nor our voices, I focused on the imperfect possibilities born of misunderstanding and misalignment, rather than seeking complete understanding. The texts and images we exchanged—ranging from casual greetings to our shared interests and work updates—became the very material for my drawings.

This record is an experiment that reveals the processes of uncertain transformation and generation, breaking away from the illusion of perfect communication. The signals we exchanged are traces of senses, misunderstandings, and imagination that language cannot fully contain. I hope these drawings serve as a threshold to another dimension, awakening unfamiliar ripples in the consciousness of the viewer.
