파주와 제주, 서로 다른 시공간에 머무는 작가 김기대와 나는 단 한 번의 만남도 없이 SNS라는 낯선 통로로 신호를 주고받았다. 미지의 생명체와 교신하듯 오간 한 달간의 안부는 작업을 시작하게 만든 소중한 단초가 된다.

이 실험의 중심에는 ‘언어의 한계’와 ‘난독(dyslexia)’이라는 감각의 변형이 자리한다. 상대의 얼굴이나 목소리조차 모르는 상태에서 나는 완전한 이해보다 오히려 오해와 어긋남이 만들어낼 불완전한 가능성에 주목한다. 가벼운 안부 인사부터 서로의 관심사와 작업 근황까지, 주고받은 글과 이미지 데이터들은 드로잉의 재료이자 변이를 위한 숙주가 된다.

이 기록은 소통의 완결성을 추구하는 환상에서 벗어나 불확실한 변형과 생성의 과정을 보여주는 수행적 드로잉이다. 우리가 주고받은 신호들은 언어로 다 담을 수 없는 감각과 오해, 그리고 상상력의 흔적이다. 10미터에 달하는 긴 롤페이퍼는 단순히 드로잉을 위한 지지체를 넘어, 소통의 시간적 궤적과 퇴적을 증명하는 물리적 지층으로 기능한다.

이 기록들은 우리가 사는 디지털 세상의 관계들이 얼마나 외로우면서도 동시에 얼마나 아름다운 상상을 만들어낼 수 있는지 보여주는 작가만의 방식이다. 보이지 않는 신호들이 종이 위에 켜켜이 쌓여 하나의 커다란 지층이 되는 과정을 통해, 우리 시대의 소통이 지닌 새로운 단면을 마주하고자 한다.

Transmissions (교신)

Artist Kim Ki-dae and I, residing in the distinct spatio-temporal settings of Jeju and Paju, exchanged signals through the unfamiliar channel of social media without a single physical encounter. For a month, our greetings—akin to transmissions with unknown organisms—became the vital seed that germinated this work.

At the heart of this experiment lie the "limits of language" and a sensory mutation I describe as a form of "dyslexia." Knowing neither the face nor the voice of the other, I focus on the incomplete possibilities born of misunderstanding and misalignment, rather than seeking total comprehension. From casual greetings to shared interests and creative updates, the exchanged text and image data serve as both raw material for my drawings and a host for their mutation.

This record is a performative drawing that abandons the illusion of perfect communication, revealing instead a process of uncertain transformation and becoming. The signals we exchanged are traces of sensations, misunderstandings, and imaginations that language alone cannot contain. The 10-meter-long roll paper is not merely a surface for drawing; it functions as a physical stratum, testifying to the temporal trajectory and sedimentation of our communication.

These records represent my unique way of illustrating how relationships in our digital world can be both profoundly lonely and yet capable of generating such beautiful imaginings. As invisible signals accumulate layer upon layer to form a vast geological stratum on paper, I seek to confront a new facet of communication in our contemporary era.
