교신 Transmissions

이승현 작가는 김기대 작가와 물리적 만남 없이, 파주와 제주라는 서로 다른 공간에 머물며 SNS를 통해 시각적·청각적 신호를 주고받으며 한 달간의 드로잉 기록을 진행했다. 이승현 작가는 마치 서로 다른 차원 혹은 미지의 생명체와 교신하듯, 얼굴도 목소리도 알지 못한 채 신호를 주고받으며 작업을 지속했다. 이 과정에서 언어의 한계와 감각의 변형, 난독의 메커니즘을 바탕으로 완전한 소통이 불가능한 상황에서 발생하는 이미지와 의미의 변화를 탐구한다.

뚜뚜뚜뚜, 뚜뚜 

나는 김기대 작가를 한 번도 만난 적이 없다. 파주와 제주, 서로 다른 시간과 공간에 머물며, 우리는 오직 SNS라는 낯선 통로를 통해 신호를 주고받았다. 마치 미지의 생명체와 교신하듯, 시각적·청각적 신호를 던지고, 또 받아 적었다. 실제로 얼굴도, 목소리도, 심지어 이름 뒤에 숨겨진 온기조차 모른 채, 한 달 동안 서로의 안부를 주고받았다. 이 실험의 시작점은 ‘언어의 한계’와 ‘감각의 변형’, 그리고 난독(dyslexia)의 메커니즘이었다. 나는 애초에 완전한 이해를 포기했다. 오히려 의미의 틈과 어긋남, 불완전함 속에서만 진짜 대화가 시작된다고 믿었다. 비록 서로를 오독하고, 오해하더라도, 그 어긋난 신호와 해석의 틈에서 새로운 이미지를 만들어냈다. 내게 이 드로잉 기록은 완전한 소통이라는 환상에서 벗어나 불확실성과 변형, 그리고 생성의 과정을 드러내는 실험이었다. 우리가 주고받은 신호들은 언어로 다 담을 수 없는 감각과 오해, 상상력의 흔적이며 그 과정의 기록이다.

Dit-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit.

I have never met artist Kim Gidae. Living in Paju and Jeju, in different times and spaces, we exchanged signals only through the unfamiliar channel of social media. As if communicating with an unknown life form, we sent and received visual and auditory signals. For a month, we checked in on each other without ever knowing each other's faces, voices, or even the warmth hidden behind our names.

The starting point of this experiment was the limitations of language, the transformation of the senses, and the mechanism of dyslexia. I abandoned the pursuit of complete understanding from the beginning. Rather, I believed that true dialogue begins only within the gaps of meaning, the misalignments, and the incompleteness. Even as we misread and misunderstood each other, we created new images in the gaps between misaligned signals and interpretations.

For me, this drawing record was an experiment that escaped the illusion of complete communication and revealed the processes of uncertainty, transformation, and generation. The signals we exchanged are traces of sensations, misunderstandings, and imagination that cannot be fully contained in language, and are records of that process.
